Over a three-year period, beginning in April of 2000, the Composition Area of
the UCSD Department of Music carried forward a unique and rewarding program called
SEARCH. Eighteen composers were brought to campus as VISITORS, some participating
in weekend-long EVENTS on curated subjects of interest, and others coming for
independent residencies. Each VISITOR was asked to give a presentation relating
to "The Future of Music".
The following TEXTS demonstrate the remarkable variety of perspectives offered by our VISITORS who, themselves, differed markedly in age, national background, and stylistic commitment. There was, perhaps, more optimism than might have been expected given the complexities of our current situation, and a recurring theme was, in a nutshell: "If you don't like what you find in your world, do something to change it."
As the TEXT for each VISITOR's LECTURE on the musical future become available, it will be posted below. LINKS TO EVENT LECTURE TEXTS FOLLOW BELOW. Some texts are still immersed in an editing and/or permissions process.
The following TEXTS are commissioned by the Composition Area, Department
of Music, University of California, San Diego for its SEARCH initiative. The
TEXTS are copyrighted and appear in their original publication here. While links
TO these TEXTS from other sites are welcome, the TEXTS themselves may
not be reprinted for any reason without express agreement in writing from the
